Babu Sport Fishing Charters January Report
It is late January here in Brigantine, New Jersey. Charter fishing is probably not on most people’s minds now. But, we here at Babu Sport Fishing Charters are beginning to plan for the upcoming season. Reels have already been sent out for maintenance. Fishing tackle is being reviewed, and restocked. All reels are getting new fishing line. The boat was pulled from the water in December and wrapped. Once the weather breaks in March, I’ll start to get the boat, Babu III, ready to launch for the 2020 charter fishing season. Besides bottom painting, cleaning and waxing the entire boat will be gone over to be certain everything is in good order. There is one major change to my dockage area for the 2020 charter fishing season. I’ll be at the same marine, Deebold’s in Brigantine, but I will be located on the main floating dock. The ladder will no longer be the main means of boarding Babu III.
As you all probably know, I mounted an electric trolling motor onto the bow last charter fishing season. The spot lock feature on the trolling motor as expected was a game changer on wreck fishing trips for sea bass, tautog, and ling (red hake). The spot lock feature allowed me to reposition Babu III up to fifteen times during a four inshore trip. Prior to having spot lock, I would only reposition about five times. The trolling motor also allowed me to fish the sod banks for striper much more easily.
The details for the 2020 charter fishing season in Atlantic City, and Brigantine, NJ are not yet available. They probably won’t be out until April or early May. However, some changes are coming. The bluefish bag limit will be reduced from fifteen to five for charter boats. This will not be a big issue in my opinion. A six person charter will still be able to bring home 30 blues for dinner. The striped bass regulations are changing. It is looking like a slot limit of 28 inches to 35 inches will be regulated with a one fish bag limit. If this happens the large cows that we catch in the ocean will all be released. Again, this is probably a good thing. The breeders being released should help to rebuild the stock, and the really big fish didn’t taste as good as the smaller fish. The fluke, sea bass, and tog season are not set yet, but I expect them to be about the same as last season. Both fluke and sea bass will probably start in May. Fluke will end in September. Sea bass will have various openings and closing into December.
Finally, as the season are updated here in the Atlantic City and Brigantine New Jersey area for charter fishing, I’ll keep this page updated. Now is the time to start to think about booking a charter fishing trip with Babu Sport Fishing Charters.
